In the summer of 2012, Deren received a small grant to create a girl-centric, craft-oriented electronics toolkit. She felt that many kits and toys relating to electronics are gender-coded for boys, excluding a large population of young inventors, makers, scientists, and engineers. She partnered with Assemble, a community space for arts and technology in Pittsburgh, PA and used the funds to pilot and test the kit with Gwen's Girls, an organisation that serves at-risk girls. Since then we have won several other awards and developed a series of toolkits.
